One More Off the Life List

Today I got the chance to work for Habitat for Humanity. Something I have always wanted to do. And while roofing in the Colorado August sun might not have been my first choice, and it was hot, thirsty, tedious work, it was a great day. I literally got to help put a roof over someone's head.

Habitat does a thorough check of the folks they build houses for to establish need. The supervisor on the site had actually seen the place where the owner of this house is currently living. The owner to be has to put in a lot of time helping to build their house and in the end Habitat gives them a mortgage for no interest and bases the payment on 25% of their takehome. Whatever that equals after 30 years it is the price of the house. Habitat makes up the rest through donations.

What's more the company for which I work, with whom coincidentally I am becoming more and more impressed, actually arranged for the day and paid us to do this. Very cool!
