A Salute to America

I have to admit, for all my criticism of the government and culture of this country, I am a huge fan of America. I mean the America in the heads and in the writings of the men who founded this country. A place where the circumstances of your birth are not regarded when the law is applied. A place where everyone is guaranteed the same basic set of inalienable rights. A place where the government is not to be trusted and so has checks built in to its constitution so that no government can ever usurp power from the people it governs.

Patriotic songs still give me goose bumps. I stand proudly for the Star Spangled Banner. Of course Toby Keith and his boot in the ass does not qualify as a patriotic song. Patriotism is the love of ones country - not rage over something that's happened to it.

Mostly I'm drawn to fireworks like a 4 year old child. I just barely resisted the urge to pull off the road to catch the Coors Field fireworks. So today I will take some time to remember what America could be and raise a glass to the visionaries who told an oppressive government to stick it.

You forgot the NFL, which would not have been possible without the foresight of brave and good men like Thomas "Feel The" Paine and my own personal favorite, Alexander "Kinglicker" Hamilton.

No, seriously. Hamilton IS my favorite.
